TagFS — Tag Semantics for Hierarchical File Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Today, most computer users work with traditional hierarchical file systems for organizing large amounts of personal files. Recently, tagging has grown popular as an alternative means of organizing information resources, especially in collaborative contexts. This paper analyzes the different semantics between strictly hierarchical and tagging-based organisation. Based on these observations, we map non-hierarchical tagging and query semantics to the commonly used hierarchical file system semantics, thus combining the benefits of both worlds. Our WebDAV-based implementation allows users to collaboratively manage their files in a tag-based manner via existing, familiar file system explorers.

Hierarchical File Systems Are Dead
For over forty years, we have assumed hierarchical file system namespaces. These namespaces were a rudimentary attempt at simple organization. As users have begun to interact with increasing amounts of data and are increasingly demanding search capability, such a simple hierarchical model has outlasted its usefulness. For this reason, we should design file systems whose organizations map to the...

This paper discusses about the future of the World Wide Web development, called Semantic Web. Undoubtedly, Web service is one of the most important services on the Internet, which has had the greatest impact on the generalization of the Internet in human societies. Internet penetration has been an effective factor in growth of the volume of information on the Web. The massive growth of informat...
متن کاملDesign for a Tag-Structured Filesystem
Tagging is an organizational system commonly used as an alternative to hierarchical systems. Many authors have recognized the desirability of a filesystem accessed with a tagging interface, as opposed to or in addition to a traditional directory interface. Existing tagging filesystems universally use conventional, hierarchical filesystems as a backing store. This paper examines the challenges i...
متن کاملContextual Semantic Search Navigation
Search has for a long time been an important tool for users seeking information. Manypopular search systems have been based on keyword search. However, such systems arenot that well adapted to explore the search space. Effective exploration requires systemswhich can guide the user in his quest. The main focus of this thesis is to generate a framework for semantic navigational search...
متن کاملJOINFS: a Semantic File System for Embedded Systems
Hierarchical file systems are the de-facto abstraction for storing information on modern computing systems. Though they are useful for providing structure for categorical data, their failings are most pronounced on consumer embedded devices. The limited interface for organizing a directory hierarchy, and abundant structured, network-accessible data complicate the management of the hierarchy. JO...
